Rescue of refugees and migrants in the Mediterranean: Practitioners’ perspectives
The Institute is organizing, in collaboration and with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a workshop on “Rescue of refugees and migrants in the Mediterranean: practitioners’ perspectives”. the burning issue of search and rescue of migrants and asylum seekers in the Mediterranean Sea.
The workshop, which will take place in Sanremo from 7 to 9 March 2016, will examine, from a range of perspectives, current issues concerning responsibilities and arrangements for the detection, search for, rescue and subsequent delivery to a place of safety of refugees and migrants crossing the Mediterranean towards Europe.
It will engage participants representing different stakeholders (state search-and-rescue coordination, naval and coastguard authorities; shipping industry; international organizations; regional and intergovernmental bodies; academics and other concerned actors) in an interactive manner. This initiative intends to provide an opportunity to share experiences; to reflect on current and best practices; to discuss concerns and gaps and to consider possible solutions. A strong focus will be maintained on opportunities for closer cooperation between stakeholders, on a more predictable basis, into the future.
